Sheridan House was established in 1968 as a
home for boys who were having behavioral problems. Since 1968 Sheridan House has
grown dramatically from a single house caring for 8 boys to four homes, caring for
almost 70 children each year.
During the past 35 years, our Board of Directors guided us to become involved
in new programs and areas of service. As a result, in our quest to respond to families
having serious short term economic needs, a social services division was established
which annually provides over 600 single mothers with food, basic living resources,
automobiles, financial counseling and other assistance.
In 1993 Sheridan House opened a Counseling Center that annually serves hundreds
of families and individuals.
Sheridan House is also involved nationally in "teaching" the basics necessary to
grow a healthy family in today's society through seminars held by Dr. Bob Barnes,
our President, and his wife Rosemary. Dr. Barnes’ books and tapes are also
available to assist in developing family and parenting skills.
Since its early years, the Board of Directors of Sheridan House has chosen not
to receive government funding, believing that the community which we serve will
provide our support. Thus, we are totally supported by individual, corporate, foundation,
and church donations.
At present we have a waiting list of children which demonstrates the need for additional
boys homes. Furthermore, we are receiving more requests from single mothers and
families for assistance and counseling. Our next challenge, as envisioned by the
Board, is to expand our residential care program by building additional children’s
homes and to offer short term housing, educational and vocational assistance and
day care to single mothers.
Recently we acquired property on which three additional boys homes are being
constructed. In addition, duplex-type housing, a training center and a day care
facility will be built on the property in order to provide single mothers a means
of having a "fresh start" as they put their lives back together.
